1.

From our experience supplying over 320 recycling sites across 40+ countries, there is no universally "better" machine. The two devices work on entirely different principles, serve different material types, and fit completely different production scales. This blog breaks down their core working logic, compares them side by side with real on-site production data, explains their respective pros and cons, and gives clear selection rules based on your daily tonnage, incoming material mix, and profit model.

2. First, Understand What Each Machine Actually Does

Many buyers confuse the two because both are marketed as "copper aluminum separator", but their internal structure and output are fundamentally different.

2.1 Radiator Stripper Machine (Mechanical Separation)

A radiator stripper, also called a copper aluminum peeling machine, works through purely mechanical rolling and tearing. The machine uses a set of serrated roller shafts to pull the radiator through, strip aluminum fins off the copper tubes in large sheets, and discharge intact copper tubes and large aluminum flakes separately.

It does not shred the material. It only breaks the mechanical bonding between fins and tubes, so both copper and aluminum retain their original shape to the maximum extent. It is the entry-level standard equipment for yards that mainly handle clean, regular-shaped radiators.

2.2 Radiator Crusher Machine (Crush + Sort Integrated)

A radiator crusher is a complete separation system that combines crushing, vibration screening, air separation and magnetic separation. It first shreds the entire radiator into 10–30mm mixed granules, then separates copper granules, aluminum granules, iron pieces and dust step by step through density difference and wind screening.

It does not require the material to be regular in shape. Even bent, deformed, iron-framed or partially welded radiators can be fed directly. The final output is uniform granular pure copper and pure aluminum, suitable for large-scale, mixed-material centralized processing.

4. Deep Dive: Pros, Cons & Real-World Limitations

Numbers alone do not tell the whole story. Below we explain the practical advantages and hidden limitations of each machine, based on feedback from yards running them daily.

4.1 Radiator Stripper – Advantages & Limits

Core advantages

Extremely low operating cost. With only 7.5–15 kW power and no consumable blades to replace frequently, the per-ton processing cost is very low. For small yards processing 2–3 tons a day, the electricity bill increase is almost negligible.

Minimal copper loss. Since the material is not fully shredded, there is almost no fine copper powder lost to dust. For high-copper-content radiators, this alone adds noticeable profit over a full year.

Premium on finished material. Many local copper buyers pay a small premium for intact copper tubes because they require less remelting preparation and have lower burn loss. In some regional markets, the price difference can reach 3–5%.

Easy to install and move. No foundation work required. You can place it on flat concrete ground and start production the same day it arrives.

Real limitations you must know

Very picky about material shape. Bent, twisted or iron-framed radiators will jam the rollers. If your incoming material includes a lot of automotive water tanks with iron borders, you will spend more time pre-cutting than running the machine.

Capacity ceiling is low. Even the largest stripper model cannot exceed 1.5 tons per hour in actual production. Once your daily volume exceeds 8 tons, one machine will not keep up, and parallel machines add more labor cost.

Separation quality drops with worn rollers. After 8–12 months of heavy use, the serrated rollers wear down and leave more aluminum residue on copper tubes, requiring regular reprocessing or manual cleaning.

4.2 Radiator Crusher & Sorting Line – Advantages & Limits

Core advantages

Accepts almost all radiator scrap. This is its biggest value. You can feed AC radiators, car radiators, industrial cooling coils, even partially rusted or deformed pieces directly. No pre-cutting or pre-sorting is strictly required, which saves huge preprocessing labor.

Scalable high throughput. A medium 3–4 t/h line processes 25–30 tons in an 8-hour shift, which equals 3–4 stripper machines working at the same time. For yards with stable bulk supply, one line easily covers all radiator processing.

Stable and consistent purity. As long as wind pressure and vibration parameters are calibrated correctly, separation purity stays stable no matter what material you feed. You do not see the big quality fluctuation that happens with stripper machines.

High automation. Most of the process is conveyor-fed. Workers only need to dump material at the feed hopper and monitor the discharge ends, which greatly reduces physical labor and staffing pressure.

Real limitations you must know

Higher power and wear cost. The crusher motor and blades are wearing parts. Heavy-duty blades need sharpening or replacement every 3–6 months depending on feed material. Combined with higher electricity consumption, the per-ton operating cost is noticeably higher than a stripper.

Small amount of copper loss. Around 1–2% of fine copper powder is carried away with dust and insulation debris. For high-volume yards this is acceptable, but for small-volume high-value material it adds up.

Larger footprint and installation work. You need a linear workshop layout of at least 30㎡. Installation and commissioning usually take 2–3 days, and the machine is not easy to relocate once set up.

5. Clear Selection Rules: Which One Fits Your Yard?

Based on our project experience, you can judge very quickly using three simple criteria:

Judge by daily processing volume – Below 3 tons/day: stripper machine is the most cost-effective choice. – 3–8 tons/day: depends on material mix; if 70%+ is clean AC radiators, two strippers work well; if material is mixed, go for a small crusher line. – Above 8 tons/day: crusher line is the only realistic option for long-term stable operation.

Judge by incoming material composition – 80%+ regular flat AC radiators: stripper gives you lower cost and higher copper value. – Mixed with lots of automotive water tanks, industrial radiators and iron-framed pieces: crusher is mandatory; otherwise pre-processing labor will eat all your profit.

Judge by long-term business plan – If you plan to expand radiator volume within 1–2 years, it is often cheaper to buy a slightly larger crusher line directly, instead of buying a small stripper first and replacing it later. – If radiator recycling is only a side business and your main profit comes from other scrap, a stripper is a low-risk entry.

6. 3 Common Selection Mistakes to Avoid

These are the three most frequent mistakes we see new buyers make, and they almost always lead to below-expected return on investment:

Mistake 1: "Crusher separation is always worse than stripper". In reality, a well-calibrated crusher line can reach 99%+ purity, equal to a stripper. The difference is not purity, but output form and copper loss rate.

Mistake 2: Buying the biggest model "for the future". If your actual daily volume is only 2 tons, running a 5-ton crusher means very low equipment utilization and high per-ton power cost. The machine does not save money when it runs half-idle.

Mistake 3: Only comparing host price, ignoring operating cost. A stripper has lower purchase price but lower capacity; a crusher costs more upfront but processes much more per shift. You should calculate payback period based on your local scrap price, labor cost and electricity price, not just the machine sticker price.

7. Conclusion

Radiator strippers and radiator crushers are not competing products – they serve different stages and scales of the radiator recycling business. Strippers are the ideal low-threshold entry solution for small yards with clean, regular AC radiator stock. Crushers are the standard configuration for medium and large recycling facilities that handle mixed, high-volume radiator scrap.

Combined with the material classification knowledge from Blog 2 and the separation principles from Blog 1, choosing the right equipment for your actual material and throughput is the first step to maximizing radiator recycling profit. In the next blog, we will break down daily maintenance, common faults and service life extension tips for both types of equipment.
